A clear guide for parents

Children’s Dental Health Advice

Practical information to help protect your child’s teeth, prepare for the first visit and respond calmly when a dental problem occurs.

The first dental visit

An early visit after the first teeth appear supports prevention and gives parents age-appropriate guidance.

  • Choose a time when the child is rested
  • Use simple, positive language
  • Avoid passing dental fear to the child

Brushing your child’s teeth

Brushing begins with the first tooth, and adult supervision remains important for several years.

  • Use a soft age-appropriate toothbrush
  • Brush twice daily
  • Pay particular attention to the evening brushing

Diet and cavity prevention

Frequent sugar exposure increases cavity risk even when each amount is small.

  • Offer water between meals
  • Limit frequent sugary snacks
  • Avoid sugary drinks before bedtime

Toothpaste and fluoride

Fluoride helps strengthen enamel. Use a small amount suited to the child’s age.

  • A rice-grain smear before age 3
  • A pea-sized amount from ages 3 to 6
  • Adult supervision

Why baby teeth matter

Baby teeth support chewing and speech and preserve space for permanent teeth.

  • Treat pain and decay
  • Maintain chewing function
  • Protect space for permanent teeth

Dental injuries

After a fall or impact, contact the center promptly even when pain is not immediate.

  • Do not touch the root of a permanent tooth
  • Store a knocked-out permanent tooth in milk
  • Never replant a baby tooth

Thumb sucking and pacifiers

Persistent habits may affect tooth position and jaw growth. They should be stopped gradually and without punishment.

  • Encourage the child calmly
  • Praise periods without the habit
  • Ask for advice if the habit continues

Preparing an anxious child

Present the appointment as a normal step and avoid frightening words or unrealistic promises.

  • Use neutral, simple words
  • Arrive without rushing
  • Tell the team about concerns in advance
